South West Region: Telcar Cocoa Graduates 2500 Farmers

 Minister Luc Magloire Mbarga Atanagana of Trade and Commerce has appreciated the CEO of Telcar Cocoa Ltd and Cargill, for their joint initiative to ensure the well being of cocoa farmers in Cameroon andSou thwest Region in particular. Speaking on September 23, 2015,

in Kumba, while presiding over the graduation ceremony of cocoa farmers from the Telcar Farmers' field school and the payment of premium to farmers who supplied their cocoa beans last year, he advised the farmers not to be misled because cocoa is a well deserved product in the Cameroonian market and therefore encouraged them to continue."Only  quality cocoa beans can pave the way to premium payment and hence increased living standard of the farmers" the minister emphasized
Meanwhile the CEO of Telcar Cocoa Ltd, Kate Kany Fotso, explained that, in 2011, Telcar together with Cargill, an international organization that produces products out of cocoa, embarked on a program called "Cargill Cocoa Promise", aimed at improving the living condition of cocoa farmers in the main cocoa producing parts of
Cameroon and as such, many farmers have been trained on how to produce quality cocoa since 2011. She disclosed that between 2012 and 2014 Cargill/ Telcar cocoa program have trained 10888 cocoa farmers through 308 farmer’s training schools. 5038 of the 10888 farmers have been certified while 250 await auditing. The CEO also noted that, they have step up the program and another 10000 cocoa farmers from the Center and South regions are currently undergoing training in 308 farmers’ field schools and will be certified by 2016. She explained that the reason for organizing the dual ceremony in Kumba, was also for Telcar to sign a Memorandum of understanding with 145 cooperatives and farmers group to train them in cooperative academy. Adding that, a package to improve productivity, improve cocoa quality beans, improve social welfare facilities of cocoa farmers has become the preoccupation of Telcar cocoa and its partner Cargill that explains why, the two partners, have also help to supply water in some localities around Meme and Fako Divisions. The Director General of Cargill on his part appreciated the authorities of Meme and Fako for the constant collaboration. He also thanked the farmers for the quality cocoa beans which they use to produce and urged them to continue with their good work. He mentioned that Cargill together  with Telcar, will help to improve the living standards of cocoa farmers in Cameroon, as the
government goal has been to increase the tones of cocoa above the 600000 tone mark within a decade and so the government has designed strategies on how to achieve that goal. Present in the ceremonial ground were some top officials; Senators, the Governor of the South West Region, SDO for Meme Division, Stakeholders.
