The World Civil Protection day was celebrated on Monday March 1, 2021, under the theme "Strong civil protection for the preservation of the national economy". Cameroon together with the international community commemorated the event with various activities
The students of Anguissa high school in Yaounde were sensitized through educational talks on civil protection, the consequences related to the consumption of drugs and the fight against the spread of COVID-19 in schools. The basketball stadium of Anguissa high school served as setting for the celebration and this was in the presence of the Principal, Mr. Jean Blaise Belibi Eyebe, the teaching staff and the team from the department of Civil Protection of the Ministry of Territorial Administration. This team sensitized the educational community on the promotion of civil protection in the Cameroonian society. Quiz, playback and fashion parade were some of the activities carried out. In order to respect the barrier measures, a thousand face mask were distributed to the students and officials.
Meanwhile, at hotel "la falaise" in Yaounde a round table discussion was organised under the theme "the impact of not taking civil protection serious in the development planning of Cameroon". Professor Dieudonné Essomba, one of the guest speakers enlightened participants of not taking into account disaster risk management and climate change in development planning. An expert on agro-pastoral issues presented the economic losses recorded in the sector due to disasters. Thus it clearly appears that even if we cannot eliminate disasters, we can reduce risks, either by decreasing the state of vulnerability identified, or by acting on the hazard. All these factors have to be taken into account when planning development projects.
The Secretary General of the International Civil Defence Organization Mariatou Yap also took part, accompanied by her Deputy Secretary, Mr. Andrey KUDINOV and Ms. Saltana TASHMATOV in charge of cooperations. The round table conference brought together journalists, civil protection actors and experts who debated on the theme.
