MINAT Boss Instructs Mobile Money officials to Identify Customers in 60 Days or Face Sanctions

The Minister of Territorial Administration, Atanga Nji Paul, has instructed the Director General of MTN Mobile Money and the Director General of Orange Mobile Money to block routes used in circulating money to terrorists in the North West, South West and Far North Regions of Cameroon or face sanctions. In an audience which he granted this April 8th, 2024, to the Director Generals, the MINAT Boss gave the Mobile Money officials sixty days to register all sim cards so as to identify the owners and track down terrorists who use Mobile Money in demanding ransom upon kidnapping. It took place in the presence of the Director General of the National Agency for Information and Communication Technologies (ANTIC). The Minister said he’s acting on instructions from the Head of State, who is the first custodian of security. He also said, reports from Governors indicate that security forces seized about 450 sim cards with over 311 million francs from terrorists who thrive in terrorism through mobile money transactions with unregistered sim cards. The MINAT Boss said, Mobile Money operations have to be controlled to guarantee peace and security.
