MINAT Engages Young People in Civil Protection Awareness

MINAT Engages Young People in Civil Protection Awareness

The Civil Protection Department of the Ministry of Territorial.Administration (MINAT) is actively engaging Cameroonian youth in a sensitisation campaign on the importance of civil protection this Thursday, February 5, 2025, at the National Museum in Yaoundé. This event is part of the 11th edition of the Youth Village, a key prelude to the country’s 59th National Youth Day celebrations. Under the theme « Youth, Maturity, and Responsibility for the Consideration of Peace, Security, Economic Growth, and the Democratic Process, » the initiative highlights the crucial role of young people in disaster prevention and response.

Officials from MINAT’s Civil Protection Department, Mr. MBARAGA Constantin Jacques Michel, Chargé d’Études Assistant (CEA1), and Madam Georgette HONGBO, Chargé d’Études Assistant (CEA3), emphasised that civil protection is a fundamental mission of the ministry, aimed at safeguarding lives, property, and the environment against various risks and disasters. Experts from MINAT provided a detailed breakdown of the different types of risks that communities face, including natural risks such as floods, landslides, and droughts; health risks such as epidemics like cholera and COVID-19; social risks including drug abuse and uncontrolled urbanisation; and technological risks such as road accidents and industrial hazards. They stressed that while risks are inevitable, they only turn into disasters when exposure and vulnerability come into play.

A key message delivered during the campaign was the importance of prevention and preparedness in reducing the impact of disasters.Preventive measures such as proper urban planning, compliance with safety regulations, and environmental conservation can significantly reduce vulnerability. Additionally, equipping both authorities and citizens with emergency response skills, including first aid training and evacuation procedures, is essential in mitigating risks. These officials also outlined MINAT’s role in coordinating emergency responses. While MINAT itself does not directly intervene in crises, it collaborates closely with specialised agencies such as the fire brigade, police, gendarmerie, Red Cross, and military. These institutions provide rapid assistance during disasters, ensuring effective crisis management and relief operations.

Beyond raising awareness, the campaign aims to instill a sense of civic responsibility among young people. Participants were encouraged to take an active role in disaster prevention by reporting hazards, respecting safety guidelines, and volunteering in civil protection initiatives. Officials emphasised that youth engagement is vital in building a resilient society capable of responding effectively. With climate change and rapid urbanisation increasing the frequency and intensity of risks, civil protection has never been more crucial. By involving young people in this national mission, MINAT is ensuring that the next generation is well-prepared to face future challenges and contribute to the country’s sustainable development. Following the presentation, youth participants engaged in a question-and-answer session, where experts provided satisfactory responses to their concerns. The event then moved to the podium of the National Museum, where additional quiz sessions were held, rewarding participants who gave correct answers. The day also featured a debate on deforestation, along with cultural performances, dance sessions, and merit awards.

The event concluded with a group photo session, marking a memorable and impactful day dedicated to youth empowerment and civil protection awareness.
