Civil Defense activists at the Ministry of Territorial Administration began the commemoration of the International Day of Civil Protection this March 1st 2024, with a visit to a site at Mbankolo where landslide occured on October 8th 2023 injuring people, killing others and destroying property. According to Mme Ndzie Ntsama Angele, Director of the Department of Civil Protection (DPC) at the Ministry of Territorial Administration, the aim was to assess the landslide area to ensure that inhabitants have quitted the risk zone. The day continued with a conference, chaired by MINAT’s Secretary General, Yves Christian Edoa Effa. It focused on innovative technologies in Civil Protection that are used in Cameroon. In line with this, the DPC presented it’s advancements including the creation of social media handles which it uses to sensitive the population, the publication of of magazines with steps in risk prevention and the understanding of the risk concept. Officials advised people to always analyze the environment where any human activity is carried out to prevent risk. Speaking, the S.G of MINAT called said the state has institutional measures put in place to respond to catastrophes. He called on each an every sector to take up their role and work in collaboration to ensure the protection of persons and property.
Stakeholders resolved to continue doing effective sensitization and to strengthen the capacity of the media in the domain of civil defense.
