The Minister of Territorial Administration, Atanga Nji Paul, has called on the people of Kaele, in the Mayo Kani Division of the Far North Region, to embrace non-violence and follow legal administrative procedure in channelling their worry. The minister was addressing the population of the area on February 12, 2025, concerning a revolt that was staged on February 7, during the launch of the Ma Bed Bed National Park, accompanied by the Governor of the Far North Region.
Speaking with regards to the revolt, the minister said he has been dispatched by the head of state to listen to the people’s problems in Kaele so as to give good counselling and appropriate solutions. He thus listened to their plight, in camera, with the view of handing a comprehensive report to the head of state. The minister called on the political, religious, traditional, and civil leaders to guide the population on appropriate ways of expressing grievances with regard to state laws and institutions. He also called on them to fight against drug consumption, which is often a vector to deviant behaviour. The minister called on the population to uphold peace, stability, social cohesion, and living together, which are dear to the nation. He exhorted them to present their worries through legal means, including the use of civil, religious, political, or traditional leaders rather than violence. After listening to the problems of the people, he assured that he would submit their worries to the head of state. He thus called on them to be calm while waiting on a response from the Father of the nation.
Also present, during the appeasement meeting were the S.D.O. of Mayo-Kani, Kpoumie Njoya Abdul Aziz; the D.O. of Kaele, Minyono Alex François; and the Mayor of Kaele, Nkrumah Jean.
The minister ended the day by visiting the area set aside for the establishment of the park. The Ma Bed Bed Park conflict is about the rejection by locals of the announced project to establish a park. At its launch on February 7, the people in the community refused to welcome the project on grounds that they would lose both farming and grazing land if the Ma Bed Bed Park is established. It is hoped that the dialogue initiated by MINAT and the hopeful intervention of the head of state would settle the matter.
